Happy birthday, Shakespeare!

Sat, 04/20/2013 - 17:01 -- Kelly Bradish

Happy 449th birthday, William Shakespeare!

Shakespeare's birthday is typically observed on April 23. The playwright's actual birthdate is unknown, although it was sometime around this date in 1564.

His date of death is April 23, 1616, which means that, if the estimated birthdate is correct, Shakespeare died on his birthday.

Stop by the reference desk on Tuesday, April 23 for a button in honor of this event. They have been popular in the past, so stop and get yours while supplies last!

Take a moment to learn a little more about Shakespeare:

  • Browse just a few of the items in our collection, including DVDs, on our Pinterest board.
  • Watch videos about The Bard and read more about his life on History.com.
  • Learn more about the playwright from the experts! Frequently asked questions about Shakespeare are answered by the Folger Library and also with short video clips by the Shakespeare Birthplace Trust.

New database trial - VAST: Academic Video Online

Thu, 04/18/2013 - 14:37 -- Kelly Bradish

We're excited to tell you about a streaming video database trial available to the campus community!

From now until May 17, 2013, students, faculty and staff can try out VAST: Academic Video Online.

More details from Alexander Street Press: Each video comes complete with keyword-searchable, synchronized transcripts. As the video plays, the transcript scrolls, and what's being spoken is highlighted. Students and instructors can make custom clips, name them, and annotate them. Clips can then be placed into personal playlists, included in course folders to share and post online, cited in papers, and embedded on websites.

Here's a tutorial from the provider:
