Collection news: Explore with National Geographic

Thu, 05/23/2013 - 17:51 -- Kelly Bradish

The entire National Geographic archive is now available in our collection!

The National Geographic Virtual Library brings together a complete archive of the magazine — every page of every issue — along with a cross-searchable collection of National Geographic books, maps, images and videos. A wealth of information about world cultures, global events, nature, science, technology, the environment, and exploration is at your fingertips.

Here are just a few examples of the variety of content available:

  • a description of a flight from Hawaii... written by Amelia Earhart in 1935
  • a travel guide to Greece (pictured in screenshot below)
  • a profile of the Sami reindeer herders of Scandinavia
  • details on how satellite images help archaeologists locate buried treasure
  • nostalgic advertisements, like one from 1952 for West Virginia's magic mountains
  • of course, maps, atlases and remarkable photos of people, places and animals around the world!

Collection news: VAST added to collection

Fri, 05/17/2013 - 15:35 -- Kelly Bradish

VAST: Academic Video Online, which we recently told you about as a trial database, has now been added to our collection!

VAST: Academic Video Online contains more than 20,000 full length titles, including 3,000 exclusive titles not available elsewhere.

A few neat features:

  • As a video plays, a transcript scrolls, and what's being spoken is highlighted. Transcripts are searchable.
  • Students and instructors can make custom clips, name them, and annotate them. Clips can then be placed into personal playlists, included in course folders to share and post online, cited in papers, and embedded on websites.
  • Citations you can export in Chicago, MLA and APA formats.
  • Content from A&E, the BBC, RCA and more.

Time to relax with an eBook

Wed, 05/15/2013 - 08:08 -- Kelly Bradish

Now that grades are posted and you're caught up on sleep, how about reading...for fun?

Even if your home base this summer is far from campus, you're traveling, or you just don't feel like coming to our Library so soon after finals, you can still enjoy eBooks and audiobooks from the WVDELI! You'll just need your UCA and password to access the collection.

There's more good news! OverDrive Read, which allows you to read a book in a web browser, is now available for some titles in the collection.

We have step-by-step instructions for common devices, including Kindle, Nook, iPad and more, in our LibGuide.

Also, don't be discouraged if an item is checked out and you need to place a hold. Many popular titles have multiple copies available, so your time on the waiting list may be short.

Happy reading and listening, and please Ask Us if you have any questions!

Thanks for your help building The Nest!

Wed, 05/01/2013 - 08:42 -- Kelly Bradish

Thank you to everyone on campus and in the community who has donated to the Nest campus food bank this semester.

Staff, faculty, students and departments on campus, in particular, have been an important part of building The Nest.

Whether it was Sisterhood Week food drives, Pierpont preschool’s tour and donation, collections from the dorms, or individuals stopping in with extra groceries, your contributions are appreciated.
