Get magazines on the go with Zinio

Tue, 08/05/2014 - 15:53 -- Kelly Bradish

We have another new database to tell you about!

Zinio, the world's largest newsstand, offers full color, interactive digital magazines for your enjoyment. Browse from your library's collection of popular titles with no holds, no checkout periods, and no limit to the number of magazines you can download. Those of you who have public library cards in Marion County and elsewhere may already be familiar with this great collection.

Here's how Zinio works:

  • Zinio and IndieFlix are both accessed from the RB Digital Gateway page. You will need to create a library collection account to use these services; once you create one, it will work for both.
  • A separate account, called a personal reading account, is needed to access and read magazines.
  • Check out the magazines you want (with the library collection account) in your computer/tablet browser; and stream the magazine instantly (with your personal reading account) on your computer.
  • You can also download the checked out magazines on a mobile device for offline reading.
  • When a magazine is checked out through the library collection account the link to the account automatically opens. Make sure you use the same email address for your account as you did for your library collection account.

You will need the number below the barcode on your campus ID in order to create an account if you are using an off-campus computer. Please let us know if you have any questions, and click here to get started!

More free music: Stream AND download from Freegal

Thu, 07/17/2014 - 17:44 -- Kelly Bradish

We have to say it -- this is music to our ears!

The ability to stream music, in addition to downloading songs, is now included with Freegal! We hope the campus community enjoys this new feature.

If Freegal is new to you, click here for details on how to log in.

With the barcode number on your current campus ID, you have a weekly download limit and a DAILY streaming allotment. Counters are in the upper right corner and will keep you informed of your allotments and usage.

Nothing has changed with the download functionality, except that the sample clips are now gone. When you put your cursor over a song or an album, you will see a "stream now" button come up. That's your cue to press that button and start listening. If you press that button on an album, the whole album will play in order.
You can also use Freegal Playlists -- lists of pre-selected songs grouped by genre -- and create your own playlists. Log in and explore!

Freegal Apps

The new Freegal Music update for Android and Apple devices is in the stores/marketplace for you to be able to stream ad-free music, at no charge to you.

If you're digging for more info about your family tree, we have several resources for you!

Here at our Library, we have old local newspapers (not indexed! Even with a known date range, expect to spend some time searching) that you can view on microfilm for obituaries and other items.

We also have books about researching your family history. These and other online resources are featured in our Genealogy LibGuide.

Need inspiration? The TLC show "Who Do You Think You Are?" begins airing new episodes on July 23. You can watch clips from past shows on the TLC website.

Finally, some advice from a genealogy blogger:

Remembering Walter Dean Myers

Mon, 07/07/2014 - 12:10 -- Kelly Bradish

Many of us grew up reading stories by respected children's book author Walter Dean Myers. Myers passed away on July 1, 2014 at age 76.

According to the Walter Dean Myers website, he wrote more than 100 books during his 45-year career. Among them are two Newbery Honor Books, three National Book Award Finalists and six Coretta Scott King Award/Honor-winning books.

Myers also received the first-ever Michael L. Printz Award and was the first recipient of the Coretta Scott King-Virginia Hamilton Award for Lifetime Achievement. He was also recognized with the Margaret A. Edwards Award for lifetime achievement in writing for young adults. You can read more about Myers, who was born in Martinsburg, West Virginia, here.
