General Information:
Purpose of the Program

The online Library Science program was established in 2001 to address the shortage of librarians and certified School Library Media Specialists in West Virginia.

For those interested in pursuing a career in school libraries:
Our eight online courses are an endorsement program, which can only be added to an existing teaching certification. Successful completion of the courses can also serve as a second teaching specialization for pre-service teachers. The program is approved by the West Virginia Board of Education.

For those interested in pursuing a career in public, academic, or special libraries:
Our six online courses provide undergraduate students with a foundation in Library Science. After graduation, students may choose to enter a Masters program in Library Science, or to work at the assistant level in a public, academic, or special library. Courses may be taken individually for professional development purposes as well.

This online program is offered through a web-based software package called WebCT/Vista.

Each online course may require up to two on-campus meetings, depending on the instructor. New students are required to attend an orientation session the Saturday before the semester begins.
