School Library Media Program for Pre K - Adult
An Online State-Approved Endorsement Program
General Information
1. The online School Library Media Program's primary purpose is to address the shortage of certified School Library Media Specialists in West Virginia.
2. The online courses are an endorsement program, which can only be added
to an existing teaching certification. Successful completion of the courses
can also serve as a second teaching specialization for pre-service teachers.
The program is approved by the West Virginia Board of Education.
3. The entire program consists of
24 credit hours, including a clinical experience.
4. This online program is offered through a web-based software package called WebCT.
5. The online courses may require 1-3 on-campus meetings, depending on the instructor. On-campus meetings maybe scheduled on Saturdays.
Course Requirements (all courses are 3 credit hours)
LIBS 1105 Introduction to Libraries
LIBS 2200 Reference & Bibliography
Either LIBS 2209 Library Materials for Children (elementary), or LIBS 2210 Library Materials for Adolescents (secondary)
LIBS 3302 Cataloging & Classification
LIBS 3303 Technologies & the Library
LIBS 3304 Organization & Administration
LIBS 3305 Libraries in the Educational Process
LIBS 4400 Library Practice
* All courses are 3 credit hours. (Total credit hours: 24)
Program Prerequisites
1. Admission to Fairmont State College
2. Minimum GPA of 2.75
3. Reliable Internet access (high speed is best, but not required)
4. Basic computer literacy, including word processing, email, transferring files, using online databases, troubleshooting technical problems, and web searching. For more information, go to http://www.webct.com/students and read through the “student orientation” section.
5. Access to appropriate computer software and hardware, including:
-- MS Word (97 or higher)
-- an up-to-date operating system & web browser
-- Adobe Acrobat Reader (5.0 or higher)
