Fairmont State University GeoSavvy Guide: Home

WELCOME

Welcome! The GeoSavvy Guide is a way to celebrate geography awareness all year long.

Join Fairmont State University as we celebrate the rich knowledge and practice of geography. We are dedicated to spreading geo-literacy and showcasing the real-world applications of Geography and Geospatial (GIS).

Along with our hub and guide, our university serves as an official participant in several events throughout the year. We organize events to celebrate geography throughout the year, both online and in person. These events bring together experts, enthusiasts, and learners to celebrate occasions from January (Big Backyard Bird Count) to November (GeoWeek and International GIS Day) to everything in between, such as Citizen Science Month and Earth Day.

We sincerely thank everyone who has contributed to the ongoing celebration of geospatial literacy. We celebrate geography every semester with the help of students, project teams, faculty, staff, alumni, and community members.

GeoWeek

Read the original Geography Awareness Week (November 1987) proclamation presented during the first National Geographic Geography Awareness Week.

A Proclamation

For generations, comprehension of world and national geography has been considered essential to the education of Americans. Yet today, in an interdependent world where knowledge of other lands and cultures is increasingly important, studies show that Americans need more geographical knowledge. Citizens, especially young people, should be fully acquainted with our country and our neighbors around the globe and aware of geography's expanding study of the oceans and the universe; the increasing wealth of knowledge provided by research in the disciplines that support geography; and geography's physiographic, historical, social, economic, and political aspects.
