Fairmont State University History: Home

This resource examines the history of the Fairmont Normal School after it became a state-owned institution in 1868. This covers the period of 1868-1916 when the Fairmont Avenue campus closed and the new campus opened on Locust Avenue.

Introduction

This guide includes the history of Fairmont Normal School from its origins as a state normal school in 1868.  Click on the tabs to learn more about Fairmont Normal from the school at the top of Quincy and Adams Street in Fairmont to its second grand campus on the 200 block of Fairmont Avenue.  The school grew in fame, produced many significant leaders for the WV Department of Education and other colleges, and was known for quality education.  You can hear the Alma Mater of the Normal School.  In early 1917, the Normal School moved to its third and final location on Locust Avenue.  The additional tabs are about significant people in the school's history.  You will find information about Elizabeth Dickey Fleming who came from Philadelphia in 1869, organized the classes and became a revered and respected teacher and principal.  Mahala Dorcas "Daisy" Prichard was an innovative Dean of Women from 1916 until 1946.
