If you have your student at home for Spring Break, here are a few topics of conversation to consider:
Ask your student to look at their Midterm grades in FELIX. Evaluate with them how their classes are going and see if it would be better if they dropped a course. Share with your student that they can visit with the Retention Office Wed. (3/21), Thurs.(3/22), Fri. March (3/23) between 10AM-2PM for the Mid Semester Crunch for advice on whether or not to drop after all areas of concern (Financial Aid, Housing and Tutoring) have been considered.
Use the break to catch up or get ahead on assignments so your student will have less stress in the second half of the semester.
Start planning what classes they're going to take in the fall (and if they’re taking summer classes). Have them send an email to their advisor to schedule an advising appointment if they haven’t already. The Summer and Fall schedule posts for viewing on Monday, March 12.
Fill out FAFSA if your student hasn't already
Research future goals. Have your student schedule a visit to career services when they return for guidance on next steps to meet their career goals.
Happy Spring Break from the Office of Retention and
Falcon Family Association!
It's time to talk Midterms and Summer/Fall course registration!
On March 14 , warning grades (of D and/or F) will be posted in FELIX. All students will be prompted to log-in to myFairmontState, access the FELIX tool and review any grades which may have been posted by selecting Student Records, then Midterm Grades. Students will also be sent the Warning Grade Action Steps (see link below). It’s important to know that passing grades of C and above are not necessarily posted at the Midterm juncture. It’s also important to be aware that students who do receive one or more Midterm Warning Grades will be invited to visit with the Retention Office at the Mid-Semester Crunch Help Station taking place March 21- 23.
The Mid-Semester Crunch Help Station helps students make the tough decision whether or not to drop a course. The professional advisors and I talk through all of the ramifications there might be for dropping a course. We also provide tips and tricks to getting back on track in a course such as time management, note-taking, test-taking and study skills. Your student can visit us by coming to the Retention Office in Turley Center 207 from 10am-2pm Wednesday, Thursday and Friday, March 21-23.
The deadline to drop a course (receive a 'W' instead of the low grade) is Friday, March 23.
